I have been trying a few different things to get my puppy with separation anxiety to calm down a bit, especially before bedtime as crate training has been a nightmare.
After all the success I’ve had with SmartPak’s equine supplements, I decided to look into their supplement for dogs. Lo and behold, they had a calming supplement that was all-natural, so I decided to give it a try.
SmartCanine™ Calming is a supplement designed to help calm your extra nervous dog during stressful times such as during storms, loud noises like fireworks, and separation anxiety. It is all-natural and contains:
- B vitamins
- Valerian root
All of these herbs and vitamins have proven calming effects in animals and people. The supplement itself comes in the form of tablets with different dosing requirements for different sized dogs. Since my dog is well below 25 pounds, he only gets one tablet a day.
I feed these tablets several different ways. First, they are yummy enough that my dog thinks they’re a treat and will scoff one down immediately. Second, you can put them in a pill pocket – I recommend Greenies. Third, you can break the tablet up into tiny pieces and place it into the dog’s food.
I have noticed a different in my dog since using SmartCanine™ Calming. He is much calmer; barks less in the crate; and sleeps more through the night. The fact that he isn’t sleeping all through the night isn’t the supplement’s fault as he is still a puppy, and his bladder can only hold waste for so long.
This tablet can be fed at any time of the day. However, I feed it an hour or so before bedtime so it has had time to get in his system and start working. Additionally, if you feed it every day, the vitamins, minerals, and other natural ingredients will start to build up in your dog’s system – allowing for more efficacy.
Of course, it is best to always talk to your veterinarian if you have concerns about your dog’s anxiety or nervousness. There may be a more serious problem than a lack of a certain vitamin or mineral. Additionally, there are also professional dog trainers that can help with things such as separation anxiety, thus eliminating the need for a calming supplement.
